  2. Actually I have experienced being shunned for the socks that i wore. In the early 50’s, I moved from Virginia to Washington state. In my home town in Virginia we were wearing woolen plaid preppy Bermuda shorts, woolen cable knit knee socks and penny loafers. I thought nothing of dressing in that manner to the first high school week end casual get together in Olympia, WA. Wrong choice for there! All the other girls were wearing plaid Pendelton skirts, matching cashmere sweater sets with ankle length matching cashmere socks and white buck shoes. “Blackboard Jungle” was a popular book at the time, and a girl said to me as I was coming in “This is no rough party. Why the shorts? Where are you coming from “The Blackboard Jungle?'” It’s not a good feeling to be wrongfully judged by outward appearances, just because they did not match the norm of that locality. The theme of your book makes me want to read it and find out what Carrie had to endure. Trudi
